It is a major feast of the Church’s year when we recall how God’s Holy Spirit was given to the disciples after Jesus’ ascension, empowering them to begin the work of making disciples of all nations. Jesus had promised his followers that, although they would not see him after his Ascension, they would receive the Holy Spirit to guide and inspire them. The Acts of the Apostles describes how the crowds gathered in Jerusalem – representing many nationalities and speaking many languages – were able to hear the disciples preaching in their own language. The colour most often associated with Pentecost is red, representing the tongues of fire which the Acts of the Apostles describes appearing above the heads of the disciples as a sign that they had received the Holy Spirit. It is the same Holy Spirit who empowers us today to be the people of God in this place and at this time. Without the Holy Spirit we can do nothing. Breathe in me O Holy Spirit that my thoughts may all be holy; Act in me O Holy Spirit that my works, too, may be holy; Draw my heart O Holy Spirit that I may love that which is holy. Strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend all that is holy; Guard me then O Holy Spirit that I always may be holy. Her Majesty the Queen has rightly been globally praised for doing an outstanding job since she came to the throne at the age of 25. And for 70 years she’s done her work as Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, and Supreme Governor of the Church of England with amazing diligence, great grace, astute intelligence, deep humility, and tremendous effectiveness. Where does all that come from – the clarity of vision, the stamina, the steadfastness in duty and care? What has shaped and sustained this remarkable stateswoman? While we know very little about what she thinks about a whole host of issues, she has been extraordinarily clear about where her guiding principles come from. Her answer can be summed up in one word: Jesus. It is, as she testifies, Jesus’ teaching that has shaped her, Jesus’ example that has inspired her, and Jesus’ power that has enabled her to do the job God called her to do. As we celebrate our servant Queen, we look with her to Jesus our servant King, as we seek to discern his plan for our lives and for his Church. ‘…..the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’ Our celebrations started as we joined the fabulous ‘Britannia’ concert in church on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Healthier Fleetwood. The bank holiday weather isn’t looking great at this point so we’re going to play it safe! Our Thursday morning Community Coffee will have a Jubilee Theme. Even if you don’t usually attend, why not come along and join the celebrations? On Saturday we will join the event at Marine Gardens starting at 12 noon. Bring something to sit on and a picnic! And following the 10.45 service on Sunday we will toast the queen with a celebratory cake and some fizz together. Almighty God, whose son Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace; Grant that, as we celebrate the earthly reign of your servant Elizabeth our Queen, so through her example of faith and self–giving, we your people may come to know the fulness of your power and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 100 Club - Winners last week were Ann Turner, Barbara Quirk and Sarah Quirk. Please remember in your prayers – Rev Jane Everitt, Jillian Muir, Tony Hardman, Rev Martin Keighley, Gillian King, Alison Horobin, Harry Pendlebury, Christine Jones, Maureen and Dorothy Angel. And also, the families of Violet Battiniello and Kenneth Jackson whose funerals are due to take place.

Sides persons – Karen & June: Reader – Elizabeth 12.30 pm Baptism of Grace Violet Melia Welcomer and Set up – Margaret Kershaw Ascension Day – This coming Thursday we along with Christians across the globe will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. For 40 days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday, the Bible says that Jesus travelled and preached with his apostles, preparing them for his departure from Earth. Ascension Day marks the moment Jesus literally ascended into heaven before his disciples, at the village of Bethany, near Jerusalem. In the Acts of the Apostles, we read the longest account of Christ’s farewell to his disciples, bidding them to preach the word of God and assuring them of his eventual return for the Second Coming. After the very first Ascension Day the disciples gathered with Mary, constantly devoting themselves to prayer while they waited for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Like them, our reliance on the gift of the Holy Spirit is total – on our own we can do nothing. Through the centuries Christians have gathered at this time to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Will you join with us in dedicating the days between Ascension and Pentecost to pray ‘Come Holy Spirit’? Heavenly Father, Your Word tells us that as You are, so are we in the world. Your Holy Spirit lives in us, and through His power, we are Your representatives. Jesus, You said that we would do the same works that You did, and even greater, through the power of Your Spirit. As we make ourselves living sacrifices, pour out the power of Your Holy Spirit on us and enable us to do Your works on earth. Amen. 100 Club - Winners last week were Mavis Evans, Sarah Quirk, and Elsie Mathias Please remember in your prayers – Rev Jane Everitt, Jillian Muir, Tony Hardman, Rev Martin Keighley, Gillian King, Alison Horrobin, Harry Pendlebury, Christine Jones and Dorothy Angel.
