We heard the story of John Newton; how he was in the Navy and Captain of a slave ship that survived a terrible storm, that impacted Newton so much that he vowed to change his ways. Newton became an Ordained Priest in the Church of England and a hymn writer. He was friends with William Cowper and together they wrote ‘Glorious things of Thee are spoken’. One of the hymns we sang together was ‘How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds’. We all enjoyed a delcious homemade lunch, cauliflower and brocoli soup, crusty bread and butter, lemon sponge and custard, tea/coffee.For more pictures click the link! A number of consecration services have been poorly attended recently and The Bishop of Blackburn is extremely keen for this not to be the case as we welcome Joe to the Diocese. Each coach departs at the same time in the morning but will return at staggered times offering an opportunity to enjoy some extra time in York after the service if you wish or come straight home if you would prefer. You must go and come back on the same bus and the departure times will be sharp without opportunity to wait for people who are not there on departure. Pray. Our most important work will be to hold this process up to the Lord in prayer and pray especially for candidates and for those deciding how to vote. The Church of England will be distributing daily election reflections in the three weeks in the run up to Election Day and you can sign up to receive these here. It is so important that the Christian voice is heard in this election and that means getting our people out to vote. The new regulations around providing proof of identity at the polling booths may need some explanation to some of our people. There may also be volunteers in your congregation who can assist older people with transport Model good disagreement. There is so much that is unhealthy in our political dialogue at the moment. At events such as hustings and in our own internal conversations, we can model what it means to disagree well
We shared happy memories of travel, either by cars, horses, trains and trams. Robert delighted us with a song about couples ‘Riding in the Car’ (aka tram) on the top deck. We had to cut it short as it got a bit risque!
