For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17 : 1 – 3Readings this week Acts 1 : 6 - 14; 1 Peter 4 : 12 – 14, 5 : 6 - 11; John 17 : 1 - 11Thought for the weekWe have reached the last Sunday in Easter. In our Gospel reading Jesus has been speaking with His disciples at the Last Supper. But now He turns His attention heavenwards, and addresses His Father. This is a very rare moment, and we are led into the privilege of witnessing the heart of the love between the Father and the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit. This is holy ground. We do not deserve to witness this moment, yet we are invited anyway. Some might see this as the heart of the Gospel. As frail and faltering human beings we are invited into God’s heart of love. We are offered forgiveness and new life, and to live in eternal life which is this present, wonderful awareness of God’s love surrounding us and filling us.Jesus prays in the Father’s presence for us as Jesus’ disciples in our world today. The Lord’s face has always been turned towards our world, and we are called to share Jesus’ love, and draw others to Him. Today marks the end of Christian Aid week. We celebrate all that is achieved through the love and compassion of Jesus in the hardest places. And that the Father is present, listens to us, goes with us, is always attentive to us, welcomes us, through the grace of the Son and in the power of the Holy Spirit. How truly blessed we are, and all believers in Jesus! Rev PaulPrayer for this weekO God the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: we beseech you, leave us not comfortless, but send your Holy Spirit to strengthen us and exalt us to the place where our Saviour Christ is gone before, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AmenRisen, ascended Lord, as we rejoice at your triumph, fill your Church on earth with power and compassion, that all who are estranged by sin may find forgiveness and know your peace, to the glory of God the Father. ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you for ever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in[ you. John 14 : 15 - 16Readings this week Acts 17 : 22 - 31; 1 Peter 3 : 13 - end; John 14 : 15 - 21Thought for the weekIn our Gospel reading Jesus speaks about love. Yet in the same breath He tells us living out His love in our lives has a very practical consequence. Jesus tells us, ‘if we love Him we will keep His commandments’. This is the beginning of Christian Aid week, which has such a practical impact on many people in the world who live in the poorest of circumstances. This year features an inspiring project enabling people in cities to grow their own vegetables by using urban farming techniques. We have the Ten Commandments, that enable ourselves and those around us to thrive. Yet Jesus gave us many more. ‘Forgive those who sin against you’, ‘Pray always’ ‘Make disciples’, 'Love one another’, 'Pray in my name’, ‘Repent’. ‘Do this in Remembrance of me’ . As we keep these and all Jesus’ commandments they have a transforming effect in our lives, and in the world. They become visible signs of the Kingdom. They enable the world to see who Jesus is, and the difference He makes in our lives. How inspiring it is that by following Jesus we can make such a practical difference often in the smallest of ways. Rev PaulPrayer for this weekGod our redeemer, you have delivered us from the power of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of your Son: grant, that as by his death he has recalled us to life, so by his continual presence in us he may raise us to eternal joy; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AmenRisen Christ, by the lakeside you renewed your call to your disciples: help your Church to obey your command and draw the nations to the fire of your love, to the glory of God the Father.
