Outside 10 Downing Street, in the pouring rain, and with Labour’s 1997 anthem Things Can Only Get Better blaring in the background, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak declared, ‘Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future. This election will take place at a time when the world is more dangerous than at any time since the Cold War.’In response, Labour leader Keir Starmer addressed voters, stating, ‘It will feel like a long campaign but, no matter what else is said and done, that opportunity for change is what this election is about.’What should we expect from our political leaders in the next six weeks?First, we should expect our leaders to be people of good character and integritySecond, we should expect our leaders to clearly outline their vision for the countryThird, we should expect our leaders to clearly set out the policies that are intended to promote and fulfil that vision. We should not confuse political power with the kingdom of God, but we should not think that political power operates independently of God either. In the coming weeks, as followers of Jesus we should pray as he taught us, and act accordingly. ‘Father who art in heaven, ... thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’ Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Barbara Sharocks, Tony Ryan, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Dean, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Norman Higgins, and John McLellan. It is a major feast of the Church’s year when we recall how God’s Holy Spirit was given to the disciples after Jesus’ ascension, empowering them to begin the work of making disciples of all nations. Jesus had promised his followers that, although they would not see him after his Ascension, they would receive the Holy Spirit to guide and inspire them. The New Testament book “The Acts of the Apostles” describes how the crowds gathered in Jerusalem – representing many nationalities and speaking many languages – were able to hear the disciples preaching in their own language. The colour most often associated with Pentecost is red, representing the tongues of fire which the Acts of the Apostles describes appearing above the heads of the disciples as a sign that they had received the Holy Spirit. It is the same Holy Spirit who empowers us today to be the people of God in this place and at this time. Without the Holy Spirit we can do nothing. Breathe in me O Holy Spirit that my thoughts may all be holy; act in me O Holy Spirit that my works, too, may be holy; draw my heart O Holy Spirit that I may love that which is holy. Strengthen me O Holy Spirit to defend all that is holy; guard me then O Holy Spirit that I always may be holy. St. Augustine of Hippo (AD 354-430) Annual Parochial Church Meeting – Thank you to everyone who attended the annual meeting of St Nic’s on Tuesday night. Please also remember the families and friends of Gordon Seddon whose funeral is due to take place.

Over 70% of people in Burundi face hunger and poverty every single day. Finding work and food is a constant battle, and even those with a roof over their heads often lack necessities like electricity and clean water. Please see our website for ‘Aline’s Story’ which brings to life the abject poverty that so many families like Aline’s have to navigate on a daily basis. If you are able to donate to this annual appeal by Christian Aid there are envelopes at the back of Church and we’ll be sure to pass your donation on. Alternatively, you can donate online at www.christianaid.org.uk Loving God, this week we pray especially for the work of Christian Aid and we thank you for all the people who work for this charity. Help them and us to make our world a better place. We pray for justice, peace and an end to poverty. Help us to see when things are unfair in our world. In our daily lives, help us to think ‘What would Jesus Do?’ Help us to have the courage to stand up for what we know to be right. Amen Men’s Brunch: David Devereux has been part of this year’s M:Power cohort and is hosting a ‘Men’s Brunch’ this coming Saturday in the Broadway Rooms. Apart from an amazing breakfast, David will share something of his journey to faith with those who gather. There is not cost involved, so if you are male and would like to come along, or if you have a male at home who you would like to send, please sign up at the back of church today. Annual Parochial Church Meeting: This is an important annual event in the life of St Nic’s and we hope as many of the church family will be able to attend on Tuesday 14th May, in Church at 7.00 pm. There will be drinks and nibbles on arrival, worship, good news stories and of course the legal bits too! Please remember in your prayers: Katie, Barbara Sharocks, Tony Ryan, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Alan Morris, Dean, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Norman Higgins, John McLellan and Chris Shuttleworth. Please also remember the families and friends of Baby Austin Taylor, Susan Cross and Eileen Fitzgerald whose funerals are due to take place.
