A 2021 survey asked what characteristics in leaders mattered most to the UK public. Overwhelmingly, respondents said they wanted politicians with integrity, and leaders who operate within the rules. The word ‘integrity’ literally means ‘intact’, or a state of wholeness. Integrity means behaving the same, irrespective of who is watching and even when no-one is! The Gospels point to Jesus as the perfect model of integrity, whose actions always match his words, who does not prefer the powerful to the powerless. God asks us to resist power-grasping instincts and instead ‘do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit’. We’re to look to ‘the interests of others’ to reflect Jesus, who was ‘in very nature God’ and yet ‘he made himself nothing...’ (Philippians 2:3–8). In Jesus we have the ultimate model, and, through his Spirit, the power to be transformed. As the election approaches this Thursday, we can value and demand integrity in the public servants we give our careful vote. We can pray for those standing for public office and working in government. And, in our own everyday contexts, let’s consider how we too might choose to resist selfish ambition to serve others with integrity. Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Dean, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan, June Larkin and David Richardson. Please also remember the families and friends of Ian Robinson, Kathleen Unwin and Margaret Rigby, whose funerals are due to take place.

Brian House Coffee Morning Wow! Massive thanks to Dorothy, Jillian and Carole who hosted our special coffee morning on the 14th and provided the delicious homemade fayre. With your support we raised and amazing £217 for the children’s hospice. Thank you to all who attended and gave so generously. Sea Shanty Evening Another first for St Nic’s and what a fabulous night! Well done and massive thanks to Alan Newton and our fabulous events team, Joanne, David and Karen for all the preparation and planning that happened before the event and on the night itself. The band was excellent. One hundred and twenty portions of fish and chips from Shakies, served hot and delicious. Lots of new faces joined us from the around the town. And it’s looking like, after expenses, we raised approximately £1500 to kick start our ‘Tower Fund’. Great fun and thank you to all those who supported it in any way. Tower Fund We have been working hard behind the scenes on our next phase of restoring St Nic’s. This now involves replacing some of the most worn bricks in the tower, substantial re-pointing and the insertion of some new cavity trays to redirect any water ingress. From Monday we enter into a 30-day public consultation period and assuming no objections are received we can move to the final phase of approval for the work to proceed in principle. The cost at the moment is in the region of £120,000 and we are going to need significant assistance in paying for this. In addition to making numerous grant applications, we will need to be imaginative in reaching out to the town to help us. With this in mind it would be good to form a small fund-raising team to direct our thinking. Is this something that you could help with? Are you knowledgeable in the area of social media and crowd funding? Please prayerfully consider it and then speak to the Vicar. Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Dean, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra Pratt, Tom, Michael, John McLellan and David Goodman. Please also remember the families and friends of Jean Laithwaite-Bond, Ian Robinson, Kathleen Unwin and Margaret Rigby, whose funerals are due to take place.

Both Fiona and Dick have become good friends to us and we are always pleased to welcome them to share in the ministry of St Nic’s. Feast for the Nations: Last year we hosted this amazing event at St Nic’s. On Saturday a similar event will be held at the URC on Dronsfield Road to coincide with Refugee Week. We are invited to join in this free event and meet some new people from different parts of the world who are trying to settle in a new country. If you are able to prepare an international dish for the occasion, it will be gladly received on the day. Loving God, You sustain us with mercy and grace and call us to share the compassion we receive. Help us to love as you want us to love: Not to ask ‘Who is my neighbour?’ But to see our neighbour in everyone we encounter and to offer help and hospitality when people are hurting. In a world that can be rushed, give us patience and time to care. In a world that can be harsh, help us to be kind. In a world that can be fearful, make us bearers of hope. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord, who came from heaven to earth, lived among us as a wanderer, and offers salvation to all. Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Tony Ryan, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Dean, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra, Tom, Michael and John McLellan. Lord Jesus, hear our voices as we pray for your care and protection. Strengthen and guide us as we strive to make our Church a safe place for all. We especially ask that the children and vulnerable adults you entrust to our care are protected. Give us the wisdom and courage to listen with open hearts, see with open eyes, and speak out to ensure children and vulnerable adults are safe, loved, respected, and cared for. May we also pray for those who have been harmed. Give them the courage to seek the truth and to heal. Lord, you call us to walk with integrity in the service of others. May we all strive to understand our collective responsibility to work together to safeguard St Nic’s. Guide us as we build a community that fosters everyone to flourish and be safe. We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Amen Please remember in your prayers: Jeff Chambers, Katie, Tony Ryan, Louise Clark, Mark Price, Dean, Debbie, Michael Carthy, Rev Jane Everett, Paul Sumner, Sandra, Tom, Michael and John McLellan.
