Ascension Day – This coming Thursday we along with Christians across the globe will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. For 40 days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday, the Bible says that Jesus travelled and preached with his apostles, preparing them for his departure from Earth. Ascension Day marks the moment Jesus literally ascended into heaven before his disciples, at the village of Bethany, near Jerusalem. In the Acts of the Apostles, we read the longest account of Christ’s farewell to his disciples, bidding them to preach the word of God and assuring them of his eventual return for the Second Coming.

After the very first Ascension Day the disciples gathered with Mary, constantly devoting themselves to prayer while they waited for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Like them, our reliance on the gift of the Holy Spirit is total – on our own we can do nothing. Through the centuries Christians have gathered at this time to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Will you join with us in dedicating the days between Ascension and Pentecost to pray ‘Come Holy Spirit’?

Heavenly Father, Your Word tells us that as You are, so are we in the world. Your Holy Spirit lives in us, and through His power, we are Your representatives. Jesus, You said that we would do the same works that You did, and even greater, through the power of Your Spirit. As we make ourselves living sacrifices, pour out the power of Your Holy Spirit on us and enable us to do Your works on earth. Amen.
