For 40 days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday, the Bible says that Jesus travelled and preached with his apostles, preparing them for his departure from Earth. Ascension Day marks the moment Jesus literally ascended into heaven before his disciples, at the village of Bethany, near Jerusalem. In the Acts of the Apostles, we read the longest account of Christ’s farewell to his disciples, bidding them to preach the word of God and assuring them of his eventual return for the Second Coming. After the very first Ascension Day the disciples gathered with Mary, constantly devoting themselves to prayer while they waited for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Like them, our reliance on the gift of the Holy Spirit is total – on our own we can do nothing. Through the centuries Christians have gathered at this time to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. Will you join with us in dedicating the days between Ascension and Pentecost to pray ‘Come Holy Spirit’? Heavenly Father, Your Word tells us that as You are, so are we in the world. Your Holy Spirit lives in us, and through His power, we are Your representatives. Jesus, You said that we would do the same works that You did, and even greater, through the power of Your Spirit. As we make ourselves living sacrifices, pour out the power of Your Holy Spirit on us and enable us to do Your works on earth. Amen. 100 Club - Winners last week were Mavis Evans, Sarah Quirk, and Elsie Mathias Please remember in your prayers – Rev Jane Everitt, Jillian Muir, Tony Hardman, Rev Martin Keighley, Gillian King, Alison Horrobin, Harry Pendlebury, Christine Jones and Dorothy Angel. Sides persons – Dorothy & Judith: Reader - Margaret Living in Love and Faith (LLF) Saturday 14th May It’s well over twelve months ago now since churches within the diocese of Blackburn were asked to start to engage with the national church on the issues of how questions about identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage fit within the bigger picture of the good news of Jesus Christ. We were asked to start thinking about what it means to live in love and faith together as a Church? The national church has been exploring these questions in depth for some time and as flagged up on this newsletter previously, the discussion at deanery level will take place on Saturday 14th May. St Nicholas is hosting the gathering in the Broadway Rooms starting at 9.45 am and ending by 4 pm. We will be joined by our brothers and sisters in Christ from Poulton, Cleveleys and Thornton to undertake a day of input, videos and discussion. We have managed to condense six evening sessions into one day! It is important that we engage with this topic as the outcomes, whatever they are, will have far reaching consequences for the Church of England going forward. Please consider giving up your Saturday to join us. There’s a sign-up sheet at the back of church. Drinks and refreshments will be provided but please bring your own packed lunch. O Holy Spirit, giver of light and life, impart to us thoughts higher than our own thoughts and prayers better than our own prayers, and powers beyond our own powers, that we may spend and be spent in the way of love and goodness, after the perfect image of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. 100 Club - Winners last week were Ruth Aspinall, Cath/Jeff Chambers, and Mavis Evans.
