Petertide Ordinations – On the 29th of June, (Thursday just gone), we marked the feast day of St Peter and St Paul. Peter has often been called the 'Prince of the Apostles' because of the words of Jesus re-naming him from Simon to Cephas. This was the Aramaic form of the Greek word Peter, which means 'rock'. Jesus said that on this rock he would build his Church. But both Peter and Paul came to be seen as having different roles to play within the leadership of the Church: Peter in witnessing to the Lordship of Christ and Paul in developing an understanding of its meaning for Christ's followers. Peter and Paul have been remembered jointly on this day since the very early days of the Church, it being regarded as the anniversary of their martyrdom in Rome in about the year 64. It is fitting, therefore, that it is traditionally at Petertide new priests and deacons are ordained in the Church of England. Yesterday (Saturday 1/7) at the Cathedral and on Sunday and Monday at different locations, a cohort of 24 deacons and priests will be ordained and released into service in the Diocese of Blackburn. Please pray for them, as they begin this new chapter and pray too for their families and for the parishes in which they will serve. God our Father, Lord of all the world, through your Son you have called us into the fellowship of your universal Church: hear our prayer for your faithful people that in their vocation and ministry each may be an instrument of your love, and give to your servants ordained at this time the needful gifts of grace; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Sea Sunday – Next Sunday we will be hosting this annual event in St Nic’s with a host of dignitaries and other organisations joining us at our 10.45 service. Every year churches around the world celebrate Sea Sunday. It is a day for people to come together to pray for seafarers and fishers, and thank them for the vital role they play in all of our lives. They often work in difficult, hazardous conditions. In the last year, more crews have been abandoned by their employers than ever before. Many are still being denied the right to leave their ships for even a short break away from the relentless noise and pressure onboard. Many are reporting more stress and poorer mental health. So it’s right that we should set this time aside to acknowledge all that they contribute but also pray for their well-being too. O God, as we remember that Your Son called His disciple, Peter, to come to Him upon the waters, we pray now for all those whose labour is upon the seas. In times of loneliness, show them that You are never far away; in times of peril be their protection; in times of temptation be their strength, and when they stumble and fall give them penitence and pardon, peace and hope. Bishop Philip wants the day to be a joyful celebration of all that happens in Blackburn Diocese in Christ’s name. Bishop Philip said, "Whilst our Cathedral is the loveliest in the country, it is not the largest and sadly all the tickets for the Installation have now been allocated. However, the Installation will be livestreamed by the Cathedral and of course, we can be joined as one in prayer that day. Please pray for me as I will be praying for you." We can join the livestream on Blackburn Cathedral’s YouTube channel. When Jesus founded his Church on earth, he entrusted it to the care of the apostles, who were the first bishops or “shepherds” of the Christian faithful. They passed on that special task to others through the laying on of hands and known as the sacrament of Holy Orders, a tradition that continues to the present time. Many are the responsibilities of the bishop, being the chief shepherd of a specific geographic location. It is a weighty task, one that is impossible to manage without the spiritual support of their flock. Below is a brief prayer that can be said for Bishop Philip, asking God to fill him with courage and strength to remain faithful to Christ and guide the people entrusted to his care with holiness of life. God, eternal shepherd, you tend your Church in many ways and rule us with love. You have chosen your servant, Philip, to be a shepherd of your flock. Give him a spirit of courage and right judgment, a spirit of knowledge and love. By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care, may he build your Church as a sign of salvation for the world. We’re delighted to be able to offer our church to the community for these gatherings. Construction Site – Please take great care in the church car park. If you are able to park on Highbury Avenue or Broadway, leaving the temporary car park for those who need it most, that would be really helpful. Drainage works have begun, making the entrance into the Broadway Rooms a little trickier. We are in constant communication with the Developers and are keeping the disruption to a minimum. Trinity – the meaning of the season – Last week marked the beginning of the second half of the Christian year, the first being Advent to Trinity, the second being Trinity to Advent. The first half of the Church year has set before us the saving life and work of Jesus Christ and now in this second half, we are prompted to conform our lives to the truth we have seen in the first half of the year. As Christians we are not only to know that our salvation is in Jesus Christ, but we ourselves must become like him. The emphasis in Trinity season is on the transformation of our life by and through the love of God. The Collects in Trinity are prayers for Divine help and guidance to enable us to bring forth the fruits of Christianity. The continuing theme throughout Trinity season is that of the practice of allowing God to live in us so that we might be able to say with St. Paul: “I am crucified with Christ, yet I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me” (Gal. 2. 20).
