This year sees a new venture for the Players. A home-grown script previously drafted and then honed in rehearsal, with music added as the play took shape and form.
It began with the central concept of the Seven Words from the Cross. But how to present this within a theatrical context? Eventually, it was decided to set the story in the break room of an A & E department. The challenge then was how to highlight the “Words” scenes. How to distinguish them from the scenes in the break room and yet still ensure a smooth transition from one to the other. In the end, we created a distinct, special moment by the ceremonial lighting of candles which heralds the beginning of a Word. Once the candles are extinguished, there is a return to everyday life.
The interpretation of the Words emerges out of the lives of the medical staff. It is their conversations, their worries and problems, their passion that determine what is said and therefore, in some cases, the relevance to the biblical words may not be immediately obvious.
