About Us
St. John’s Church, West Bay, built in 1936, stands on a corner of a busy road. The entrance faces the sea and the slip-way for the boats. In summer time, after the service, the congregation lingers, chatting in the sunshine. This is a “Chapel of Ease” associated with St. Mary’s parish church. It has a regular Sunday congregation.
West Bay was the setting for the BBC TV series Harbour Lights screened in 1999 and 2000 and more recently ‘Broadchurch.’ There is, at St John’s, an important ministry to visitors who appreciate the beautiful church in its central location by the harbour. During the Summer season, in conjunction with Churches Together in Bridport and District, special services are held on Sunday evenings, most of which are outdoors.
Bridport with its port at West Bay is noted for its history, scenery and life the whole year round. The area is very popular with tourists from across the world. People from the New World come in search of their ancestry, whilst all visitors appreciate the Jurassic Coast and the stunning coastal scenery, and soft hills and woodlands that circle the Brit and Asker valleys in which the Bridport Team lies. Locals work in the many small light industries and commerce that have now largely replaced the rope and net-making that once dominated the economy. Whether local or a visitor all are welcome at any time in all of our churches.
