Reflection from Nigel Price Reflection for September19 2025 Luke 8:1-3After this, Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means. (NIV)ReflectionThey say that behind every successful man is a woman. Luke names three here who are travelling with Jesus. It is important to note – and trust Luke to do so – because women were just as important as the men in promoting the Gospel, even given the culture of the day. And of course we need all the hands that are available to assist in spreading the good news. Any meetings held by our Bishop tend to start with a short Bibel study and the text so far has always been the same, again from Luke’s Gospel and it is the passage that starts by saying that the harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few. We are always bemoaning the fact that there are not enough people taking on the many varied roles within our churches. But the next verse of that Gospel goes on to say, so ask the Lord of the Harvest to send out workers into his field – the implication is that God will supply the workers that we need. Maybe we are not asking enough. The Foundations course will be starting for a second time later this year. Following the last course, held in Barnstaple, almost everyone by the end was contemplating some form of future service. I would encourage anyone who thinks that they may be called into some form of service within the church – pastoral or leadership – to consider enrolling to gain a grounding and an opportunity to explore and discern what God may have in mind for you.So let us pray: Almighty God, you search us and know us: may we rely on you in strength and rest on you in weakness, now and in all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
