At St Peter and St Mary Magdalene, we are blessed with beautiful Stations of the Cross. Through Lent, we’ll reflect on four of these at every service by hearing a Bible reading, praying, and singing a hymn at each one. We then celebrate Mass together at the altar of St Mary Magdalene.
The Stations are copies of those originally painted in 1888-98 by the Belgian artist Jan-Willem Rosier (1858-1931) for the Church of St Ursula in his hometown of Lanaken. Copies by Charles Beyaert of Bruges were acquired by St Mary Magdalene’s, Barnstaple, in 1911/12. On the closure of St Mary Magdalene’s, the Stations were installed in their current location in 1976. Among the other copies made, one is found in St Hubert’s Church, Runkst, Belgium.
