Practices of Whole Intelligence: Inspired by the Peace Prayer.

The Prayer of St Francis shows how human suffering, (e.g. ‘injury’ and ‘despair’), can be met by active human responses (‘pardon’ and ‘hope’). Whole Intelligence (nothing to do with IQ tests!) is a summary term for human capabilities that can help us face with equanimity our own and others' fears, loneliness, and uncertainties. Our focus will be on discovering five ‘gateways’ to greater Whole Intelligence. What’s individually practised can also spread to transform communities and organisational systems. The hour will include some listening, conversation, and quiet reflection.

Malcolm Parlett has worked as a psychologist for over half a century. He was one of those who pioneered gestalt therapy in Britain and edited the British Gestalt Journal for 15 years.

He came to live in Totnes four years ago, and is most at home spiritually with Totnes Quakers.

He chairs the Whole Intelligence Research Fellowship, which is internationally spread. The website is www.wholeintelligence.org and his book Future Sense: Five Explorations of Whole Intelligence for a World That’s Waking Up (2015) is available as an e-book.

Parish and Priory Church of St Mary the Virgin

St Mary’s is a significant landmark here in Totnes with its red tower and defining pinnacles that reach high above the neighbouring buildings. It’s a visual delight for lovers of architecture, photography and history, but also for all that live here and for those who visit the town each year.

Inside, St Mary’s really leaves its mark on those who pass through the doors. This space of purpose is where history, music and the sacred entwine. You can feel it when you step inside. The church has witnessed many challenges and has stood through massive social upheavals.

Today, as the times change again, St Mary's remains a place for sanctuary, wisdom and learning, for all that is most profound in the human spirit. This remains the principal function of the building and needs to be protected. Christian congregations worship here but our doors and hearts are open to other faiths and many individuals come to pray, light candles and just sit in stillness and silence.
