A Norman church but on a site dating back to Saxon times, St Mary's is notable for rare and magnificent 17th century wall paintings which are now cared for by English Heritage. The church has a Norman font but much of the interior was renovated in the 19th century to a very high standard. The windows are very fine examples of 19th century work by Lavers & Westlake, London. St Mary's has a matched set of six Pennington Bells, cast in 1767, which are rung regularly.
Today St Mary's is a member of the Northmoor Team of Churches in the Okehampton area on the north-west edge of Dartmoor. There is a Sunday service every week at St Mary's and the church is open to visitors every day (during daylight hours, or at all other times by request to the neighbouring keyholder). A congregation of all ages is active in the village community, and the church is a beautiful venue for baptisms, weddings and other special services. The Team clergy welcome enquiries about baptisms and weddings - see links for more details. Do come to Bratton Clovelly and visit St Mary's - the view from the churchyard is breathtaking.
