About Us

Welcome to St Mary's Church, Burlescombe.  Our mission is to deepen our relationship with God through Jesus Christ and to be witness to Him in our community.  To be aware of, and respond to, the needs of all age groups as we seek to encourage them in worship, prayer and faith.

<span style="font-size: 1rem;">Although predominantly rural and agricultural, Burlescombe has two quarries and a tile distribution centre. Village life revolves around the vibrant primary school, community hall and ancient church. The parish consists of two communities - Burlescombe and Westleigh about one mile apart. The Grand Western Canal passes through the parish and was originally built to transport stone and lime, but now offers relaxing walks and cycle rides along its 11 mile towpath to Tiverton. The ruins of the 12th century Canonsleigh Abbey and medieval chapel at Ayshford are nearby. The modern community hall is the focus for social and leisure activities and includes clubs and dances.</span>

The Church The church was built in the late 13th century with additions being made in the 15th century. It was renovated in the Victorian period when new carved oak pews and stained glass windows were added. The church has a fine two manual pipe organ which is played regularly at services. There are 6 ancient bells which are rung occasionally for services and by visiting bell ringers.

Church fund raising events are held regularly which help towards running costs, aided by The Friends of St Mary’s which was established in 2009. Harvest, Christmas and other festivals are particularly well attended.
