About Us
Welcome to St Simon and St Jude, Hockworthy
Hockworthy is a tranquil rural village and the parish includes the hamlets of Staple Cross and Waterslade. It covers a large area but with a population of only 174. Although the inhabitants are predominantly involved in farming, with many families having associations with the village over several generations, current residents of Hockworthy come from all walks of life and embrace a variety of artistic, business and professional interests. Hockworthy is a very vibrant, active and sociable community with a strong sense of its own identity, the local pub at Staple Cross being a hub for the village.
The village hall, which was originally the school, has close connections with the church and hosts frequent musical, church and other events.
The Church
All are warmly welcomed into the church which has a traditional but slightly quirky mix - we love traditional services and hymns but are more than happy to have a service in a cowshed before the Dog Show. The church is much more strongly supported than normal attendance figures might indicate. At least 15 families in the parish are actively involved in various church-related activities.
Being a small rural community, we only have two services a month, Holy Communion on the 2nd Sunday and Matins/Family Service on the 4th. All bar the six Family Services a year are Book of Common Prayer. Visitors are most welcome for worship and for refreshments afterwards.
