The Service of Shadows (Tenebrae) – Good Friday

The Service of Shadows is a solemn and reflective liturgy held on Good Friday to commemorate the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. Drawing from the ancient tradition of Tenebrae (Latin for “darkness” or “shadows”), the service invites us to journey through the events of Christ’s Passion through Scripture, music, silence, and the gradual extinguishing of candles.

As each reading recounts a portion of the Passion narrative—from Jesus’ betrayal to His crucifixion and burial—a candle is extinguished, symbolizing the encroaching darkness of the world’s sin and sorrow. The service moves steadily toward silence and shadow, helping us to enter into the weight of Good Friday and to reflect deeply on the cost of divine love.

The final candle, known as the Christ candle, is removed, leaving the sanctuary in near darkness. A loud sound (strepitus) is then made, representing the earthquake at the moment of Christ’s death. The candle is returned briefly, signifying that death does not have the final word, but the service ends in silence, encouraging quiet contemplation as we await the joy of Easter morning.
