Sermon - 2 April 2025
This sermon examines the encounter between Jesus and the rich young ruler in Matthew 19, revealing how wealth can create a transactional mindset toward God. The rich man's question "what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" demonstrates his belief that salvation can be earned through actions rather than received as a gift through faith. Despite his moral achievements, the man's attachment to wealth prevents him from experiencing true fulfillment. Jesus exposes that wealth often fosters pride and self-sufficiency, making it difficult for the rich to enter God's kingdom. The theological core of the message contrasts works-based righteousness with the Gospel of grace—that salvation is impossible through human effort but possible through God. The sermon concludes by emphasising that Christians should adopt a humble attitude toward wealth, live frugally with gratitude, and practice generosity to break money's hold on their hearts.
