Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, the six weeks of penitence before Easter. It is celebrated with a special service, at which churchgoers receive ash on their foreheads, prepared by burning palm crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday. As the priest places the ashes on each person´s forehead, he says the words, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

So what´s behind this? In preparation for Easter, Lent is a time to be honest with ourselves and with our God. So on Ash Wednesday we think about where we have failed, where we have been hypocritical - saying one thing and doing another. The ashes are there as a kind of public statement, that those who receive them are prepared to make a commitment to try to live their lives honestly and truthfully.

And it´s not easy: it is often so much easier to pretend, to go along with the crowd, to play act. It is, after all, from the language of the Greek theatre that the word "hypocrisy" was derived.

In this year’s gospel reading, a group of men are starting to throw stones at a woman caught in adultery, as the Jewish law allows. And they come to Jesus and ask if he agrees with their action, in the hope that they can make him speak out against the law. But Jesus focusses not on the woman, but on them: “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to cast a stone”, he says, pointing out their own hypocrisy. And one by one they back away.

There will also be a Eucharist with the Imposition of Ashes at 7.00pm in St George's, Malaga.

Salinas Anglican Congregation

WELCOME TO THE SALINAS ANGLICAN CONGREGATION THIS CHRISTMAS TIME🎄

At Christmas time we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in a stable in Bethlehem. We are all familiar with the story - the little town of Bethlehem, the shepherds watching their flocks, the herald angels singing, the 3 Kings from Persian lands afar, and the birth of a small baby to young & humble, yet delighted, parents.

But sometimes we forget what an amazing story it is. Listen to Sir John Betjeman read his famous poem, ‘Christmas’ here, with the powerful final verse:

“No love that in a family dwells,
No carolling in frosty air,
Nor all the steeple-shaking bells
Can with this single Truth compare –
That God was man in Palestine
And lives today in Bread and Wine”

Do join us if you would like to, for our Christmas Eucharist, here at Salinas Church, 4pm (Spanish time) on Christmas Eve. Details of other Christmas services, at our churches in Salinas and Malaga, can be found here.

Listen to Amy Grant sing her lovely Christmas song, ‘I want a Silent Night’, here.
