This year’s journey brings us to the renowned pilgrimage site of Kevelaer, a Marian shrine to Our Lady of Consolation. According to tradition, in the days before Christmas, 1641, a merchant named Hendrik Busman was walking from Weeze to Geldern where, as was his custom, he paused to pray at a cross at Kevelaer. There he heard a voice saying: “Here thou shalt build me a chapel.” After the same thing happened two more times—and after his wife also had a vision of a chapel with a portrait of Our Lady inside—the chapel was built. Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass there in 1987.
We will begin our journey on Thursday evening in Weeze (approximately 80 km north of Düsseldorf), overnighting in a guest house. Following breakfast on Friday, we will walk about to Kevelaer—a relatively easy 7-8 km trek along a fairly even path. We will stay the night in Kevelaer. Our pilgrimage ends on Saturday following midday Mass.
