Corsenside St Cuthbert
Worship only takes place in St Cuthbert's Corsenside in the summer, but the church is open all year for private prayer and meditation. We especially welcome those who visit graves in this beautiful churchyard to spend some time in the church. Parts of the graveyard are deliberately kept as wildflower meadow, whilst the most visited areas are maintained by mowing.

Welcome to St Cuthbert's in Elsdon - we are glad you found us!
The church is open to visitors every day (usually 9am-5pm) as a quiet place for contemplation, prayer and exploration. St. Cuthbert's has a long and interesting history, with Roman & Saxon burial stones, medieval building works from 12th century onwards, and Victorian alterations creating a complex building that speaks of the long Christian history of our area. For full details see the 'History of St Cuthbert's Church' in our 'News' section. For our church magazine please see the News and notices/ Notice sheets section. Byrness: St Francis
“Built in 1793 and consecrated three years later, St Francis church was at one time the smallest parish church in the diocese of Newcastle. The stained glass window, installed in the south wall in 1903 commemorates those of the community who died during the period of construction of the nearby Catcleugh Reservoir and was paid for by their fellow workers. It is reputedly the only such window to include the depiction of a narrow gauge railway.”
St. Francis reopened in June 2021 having had the pews, floor, pulpit, wainscotting removed, to be treated for both wet and dry rot. A new floor was laid and everything replaced. The Minton tiles depicting the Agnus Dei and other imagery are another interesting item in the Church.
The Church is open 24 hours for prayer and contemplation, we have Holy Communion at 3pm on the 4th Sunday of each month. St. Francis is directly on the Pennine Way and walkers are welcome to rest at the Church, bottled water is provided.

“Built in the Neo-Norman style by John & Benjamin Green in 1844. The original pine furniture was replaced in 1895 with oak fittings in memory of the original patron, the 2nd Lord Redesdale. The organ gallery was added in 2000 and a fine organ was imported from the redundant Methodist Chapel in Tow Law, Co.Durham, and has been lovingly restored. There is a Roman altar in the porch.”
