Banstead Church Institute occupies a prominent position on the High Street and is home to a wide variety of interest groups, both religious and secular. It comprises a large Hall with full stage curtains and seating for 130, the church office, an upstairs carpeted Gable Room with seating for 25, a members-only snooker club and the Orchard Room which operates as the volunteer-run Open Door café from Tuesday-Saturday each week. The ground floor rooms and facilities are fully accessible to disabled people.
Most of the facilities are available for hire when they are not required for church activities. There is no caretaker and nearly all the lettings are to regular hirers. The Banstead Men’s Club (for snooker) has been an integral part of the building for more than a century! We try to provide a balance of activities for the benefit of the community. Currently there are monthly film shows run by the Curzon Country Cinema. Drama, stage and dance classes for young people and some karate and fitness session are regular hirers, and on Saturdays markets or fairs are held in the Hall. Each weekday morning a Pre-School meets in the Hall. All activities are prominently displayed on the notice board fronting the High Street.
The Banstead Five Churches combine to run the Open Door Café in the Institute from 10am-2pm five days per week. Here patrons enjoy a range of reasonably priced food and drink and can be assured of a welcome and a listening ear from the volunteers who run it. The café is the church in action and is a valued support for many with difficult lives. The Banstead Five Churches also combine to stage an annual pantomime in the hall. The May Fair and the July Village Day see the Orchard and Institute as the venue for the whole community’s celebrations.
Parish business is conducted from the church office. The administrator may be contacted by phone 01737 379289 or email [email protected] . Parties following baptisms or funerals may be arranged but there is insufficient capacity to allow adult parties.
