Weekly News - 26th May 2024

This weekend’s Bible readings:

Isaiah 6:1-8 (p 691) and 1 John 4:7-21 (p 1227)

Choral evensong 26th May:

This weekend we will hold our regular 4th Sunday service of choral evensong. Please join us for this service of words and music, led by our benefice choir. Worshippers have used this service from the Book of Common Prayer for centuries, and that adds to the significance of the text, which nevertheless remains relevant to our lives today.

Pop Up Shop 26th May:

The pop up shop will be open this weekend at the 10.30 service at St Mary’s. There will be some items for which only a donation is needed which will go directly to the food bank. There will also be some delicious fair trade chocolate, coffees and tea as well as Christian gifts and cards.

Book stall 26th May:

There won’t be a book stall at our all-age service this month, as Lizzy will be away. However, she is, as always, happy to order any Christian book that you would like to buy. She can be emailed at [email protected].

Standon Open Gardens 8th June:

Tickets are now on sale for the FOSM Open Gardens event, which will take place, as usual, on the second Saturday in June, from 11.00 am until 5.00 pm. We are looking for helpers and people to bake for the various tea and cake stops around the route. Please contact Diana or one of the committee if you can offer your services.

And Dane End Open Gardens 23rd June:

Please can you spare an hour or make some cookies? On June 23rd, 12noon - 5pm, the Dane End Parish Council is holding an Open Gardens on behalf of All Saints church, to raise funds to “repair the roof “. We will be providing tours inside and outside of the church, with refreshments served by volunteers from the church.

Please let Deborah know if you could help on a rota in the church to serve refreshments on that day. Also if anyone would be able to make some ‘manhole cover cookies’ to serve, please ask Deborah for a recipe, or reply to the email when you receive this sheet, and Caroline will send it to you.

Little Munden School Fete 22nd June:

LMS summer fete is the day before the Dane End Open Gardens. We have agreed to organise and man the teas and cake stall at the fete, but many of the café helpers are tied up with the Open Gardens the following day. If you can bake a cake or spare an hour on 22nd June, please speak to Caroline.

News from FOSM AGM:

The Friends of St Mary’s held their AGM on Friday evening. 2023 has been another successful year of enjoyable fund-raising events, and the accounts reported a total raised from events of £18,500. In addition, they received several donations and a legacy. FOSM has been able to provide grant funding to the PCC for the recent drainage work under the tower and for the first phase of the high- level work on the tower, which is due to start soon. The new committee has its full complement of 12 members, though no-one at present has agreed to step into the chairman’s shoes as Diana steps back from that role. FOSM’s next event will be Standon Open Gardens, mentioned above. Please continue to pray for the work of the Friends, without whom much of our capital work at St Mary’s would not be possible.
