Weekly News - 18th June 2023

This weekend’s Bible readings:

Romans 5:1-8 (p 1132) and Matthew 9:35-10:8 (p 974)

Welcome:

This morning we welcome Ed Dodge, who will be playing the organ for our 10.30 service.

Alpha Course:

We will be joining in with the Alpha Course in Thorley on Wednesdays from 13th September. Please pray about this and especially if you can invite anyone along. We hope that we will be able to take a group from our benefice. Please speak to John for more information.

Thank you!

Thank you to all who supported last weekend’s events in any way. Open Gardens in Standon raised £8,750 and the talk at St Catherine’s raised £481.

Choral evensong next week:

Next Sunday, our usual 4th Sunday service of choral evensong will take place at 6.30 pm in St Mary’s. Please come and enjoy this reflective service, led by our benefice choir, conducted this month by Richard P and accompanied by Huw.

Occasional helpers sought for Lagoons:

Our Bible study group for older young people runs on Wednesdays from 5.30 to 6.30, led by Red Balloon. Lizzy is usually there as the ‘second adult’, but there are some Wednesdays when she can’t make it. If you would be willing to join a small list of people willing to step in when she can’t be there, please speak to her.

Sunday lunch at The Star 25th June:

Heather’s next Sunday lunch will be on 25th June at 12.15pm at the Star in Standon. If you would like to book a place please give Heather a call on 07909 065550.

Mothers’ Union Strawberry tea 28th June:

The next meeting of Braughing with Standon Mothers' Union will be on Wednesday 28 June when they will be holding their annual Strawberry Tea at 2.30pm in the Church Hall, Braughing. This is open to everyone, not just members of the Mothers’ Union. Donations to cover costs will be greatly appreciated. Please contact Diane on 01920 821130 or 07949 665365 by Sunday 25 June if you would like to come, to ensure we have enough strawberries & scones.

There will be a Bring & Buy stall with proceeds from this going to the Mothers’ Union project ‘Summer of Hope’ to raise funds to empower women around the world. If you have anything to donate to the Bring & Buy stall that will be very welcome.

‘Persuasion’ at Brockholds Manor 1st July:

Unfortunately, the planned production of Persuasion has been cancelled. Refunds will be processed for everyone who has bought a ticket.

FOSM Safari Supper 14th July:

Diana is selling tickets for this year’s Safari Supper. The supper will be served at various locations in the village, and tickets are £35, to include wine.

Holiday Bible Club 29th August to 1st September, 10.00 until 3.00:

We are starting to assemble the team to support this year’s holiday Bible club and the publicity is going out to schools etc in the next week or so. The theme will be Jonah, linking each part of Jonah’s story with gospel stories. We’ll need people to help with leading groups, preparing refreshments and setting up and clearing craft activities. If you’d like to know more or to volunteer, please speak to Caroline. And if you know any children who might come along, please spread the word! Fliers will be available very soon.

Songs of Praise advance notice:

Little Munden are planning a Songs of Praise on Saturday 9th Sept at 3pm to commemorate the late Peter Jackson (Heather's husband) who arranged music for the Music Group. Hopefully we will raise some funds at the same time. More information will follow nearer the time.

Day of prayer for the emergency services:

The National Christian Police Association in the UK started a Day of Prayer for the Police a few years ago now and since the pandemic it has been expanded to become the International Day of Prayer for the Emergency Services. This year it is on 22nd June and it will be commemorated at Police HQ with a short service attended by representatives of the Emergency Services and the faith groups which are run within Herts police. Please pray for our Emergency Services on this day.

Website:

Our benefice website is on the www.achurchnearyou.com platform. The benefice page can’t currently be reached but you can find the three churches individually by going to https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/7825/ and clicking the links there.
