Baptism
In baptism (also known as Christening) we thank God for his gift of life and publicly acknowledge his love. Baptism is the rite of entry into the Christian Church, and that is why traditionally the font is sited close to the main entrance of the church. It is far more than just a naming ceremony for the candidate (at whatever age), baptism marks the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives.
Jesus himself was baptised in the River Jordan by John and it marked the beginning of his public ministry. The water of baptism both cleanses and heals, bringing the candidate and the Church to a moment of great rejoicing as we glimpse the glory of God through the mystery of this sacrament.
Baptisms at St Michael’s usually take place on the third Sunday in our main service at 11.15am. To keep things personal (and because of space!) we only usually book in one baptism at each particular service.
If you have any questions please do contact us. Baptisms are usually booked at Clergy Surgery on a Saturday between 10am and 11am at St Mary’s Church, Welwyn.
Wedding
We are delighted that you are considering getting married at St Michael’s Church.
Holy Matrimony is one of life’s important occasions which marks the beginning of a couple's married life together. The marriage service marks a public witness to the love that two people have for one another.
Whether or not you are a regular churchgoer, getting married in church allows you to make solemn promises to the one you love, not only in the presence of your families and friends, but also in the sight of God and with God’s blessing.
Every year thousands of couples get married in their local church, or a church with which they have a particular connection.
It is worth noting that there are legal constraints for all couples who wish to marry at St Michael’s (or any other Church of England Parish Church). The Church of England calls this a 'qualifying connection'. Further information about qualifying connections can be found here, alternatively please contact us and we will be able to advise.
Weddings are usually booked at Clergy Surgery on a Saturday between 10am and 11am at St Mary’s Church, Welwyn.
Regrettably, we are not legally able to offer marriage in church for same-sex couples. It is possible to have prayers of thanksgiving following your Civil Marriage or Partnership. Please contact us if you would like to discuss this further.
Funeral
Every life, including our own, is precious to God; the bible is clear in telling us that all life is sacred. Christians have always believed that death is not the end. Jesus’ resurrection and subsequent ascension to heaven is the fundamental hope at the heart of the Christian faith and at a Christian funeral we seek to foster that hope as we give thanks to God for the life of the person and commend their soul to God.
We are fortunate at St Michael’s to have an open churchyard (that is we still have space for new burials). The churchyard is an asset for the community and the home to much wildlife; deer, foxes and badgers have all been spotted over recent months. The churchyard also allows for the burial of cremated remains in either a new or existing grave. There are certain restrictions when it comes to the design of memorials and the ordering of the churchyard. Further information can be found here.
When arranging a funeral, initial contact is usually made on behalf of the family by the Funeral Director direct with the clergy. The minister officiating at the service will then be in contact and arrange a suitable time to meet with you to discuss the funeral arrangements.
