OUR HERITAGE:
St Augustine's Church, Broxbourne is a Church of England Parish church. It is a beautiful Grade 1 listed church with many facinating stories from history and points of special interest.
In the Domesday Book of 1086, there is a reference to a parish at Broxbourne and to a priest, but not to a church. However there was a church on the east side of the High Road.
The position of the present parish church of St Augustine is on the old Broxbourne to Nazeing road and althought the date of the original chancel and nave are not known, the church was completely rebuilt and enlarged in the 15th century, around 1460, probably funded by the Lord of the Manor, Sir John Say, who died in 1478. The tomb of Sir John and Lady Say remains in the church and is a National Monument. The church font is late 12th century.
The church stands opposite the New River and on the edge of the Lea Valley Park with the River Lea 1/4 mile away
St Augustine's is now part of the Parish of Broxbourne with Wormley, formed in the late 1970s from the two parishes of Broxbourne and Wormley. It's sister church is the Grade 2* listed St Laurence Church, Church Lane, Wormley.
OUR LIFE:
St Augustine's is a friendly Bible-teaching Church of England church, that proclaims Jesus Christ to our community. There is a welcome for all ages and all stages of faith, whether you are already a Christian or just want to find out more.
We have an increasing ministry to families and we are a growing community with an enthusiasm and commitment to develop both our Christian ministry and our involvement with the community.
Bible Study groups and teaching ministries are complemented by our commitment to help and support all those who come for marriage, baptisms and bereavement.
Pastoral care is an important part of our life, and we offer a Christian perspective to help people gping through different stages of life.
We are linked with the excellent Church of England Broxbourne Primary School, with many school events in the church.
Attached to the church is a useful Parish Centre, which is both used for church events and also hired out to the community.
The Parish of Broxbourne with Wormley is a member of the New River Group Ministry, together with Hoddesdon Parish Church of St Catherine & St Paul and St Cuthbert's church, Rye Park.
You are all very welcome!
