Talk on HMS Captain

On Sunday 28th July at 2.30pm we are hosting in the Church a talk by Dr Howard Fuller about the loss of HMS Captain off Cape Finistere on 7th September 1870 with nearly all 500 on board, including the Captain, Hugh Burgoyne VC (Crimea) who was related to the Burgoyne family local to Sutton. The ship was a new hybrid vessel with gun turrets, sails and steam power which was deemed seaworthy in initial sea trials but floundered in a storm as it turned out to be unstable. Dr Fuller will update us on the progress of the ‘Find the Captain’ project to search for the ship and will explain the circumstances and events leading up to sinking, and the repercussions for future ship design.

Tickets are £10 including Afternoon Tea from [email protected] or on the door. All proceeds to All Saints Church.
