As twilight descends on Maundy Thursday, we step into a sacred tapestry woven with ancient rituals and profound meaning. Here, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper unfolds, a poignant commemoration of the Eucharist’s inception by our Lord on the eve before His sacrifice.
Imagine Jesus, surrounded by His disciples, delivering a moving discourse on unity. He imparts the sacrament of unity – Holy Communion – a tangible promise that He will forever be with them. The term “Maundy” traces back to the Latin “Mandatum,” echoing His commandment: “Love one another.”
Picture the priest, echoing Christ’s humility, washing feet during the Liturgy. As Good Friday approaches, no Mass graces that solemn day. Instead, the Sacrament consecrated on Maundy Thursday is reserved for the morrow.
In a solemn procession, it finds its way to the Altar of Repose, adorned with flickering lights and fragrant blooms. There, it rests until dawn breaks. Altars are then stripped bare, mirroring Christ’s own vulnerability before crucifixion.
As midnight envelops the world, a watch begins. Those departing do so in silence, while others remain, their prayers weaving through the quietude. We recall our Lord’s agonizing moments in the garden of Gethsemane, offering intercession for the world He loved.
And at the stroke of midnight, a Tenebrae service casts its solemn glow, a whispered promise amidst darkness. 🕯️🌿

We are an inclusive and diverse church with a wide variety of services and activities, some are traditional and some are modern and informal, all within the Affirming Anglo-Catholic tradition of the Church of England. Whether it is Sung Mass, quiet contemplation or family worship, we have something for you.

We care about our community. We work with Ark St Alban’s Academy where our vicar helps the students. We help Stanhope Wellbeing Hub, Highgate Community Support Ltd and run Highgate United Food Bank. We also welcomed people who are new to this country.
