This Christmas, we are inviting the congregation to consider a more environmentally friendly approach to exchanging Christmas cards. Aiming to reduce the environmental impact of the traditional Christmas card exchange, Elizabeth is kindly preparing a noticeboard where we can all pin a card for everyone. The board will be at the back of church from 1 December.
According to A Rocha UK, if the Christmas cards exchanged in the UK each year were laid alongside each other, they would encircle the Earth 500 times. This staggering figure highlights the ecological cost, prompting us to explore sustainable alternatives. “While cards are a beautiful way to connect, this small step can help reduce waste and save trees,” said James, member of the Eco Group.
People who would prefer to send individual cards are encouraged to purchase cards which support charitable causes. And for those with friends or family who are far away or might feel isolated this Christmas, a more personal card is always welcome.
This initiative aligns with growing awareness of the environmental impact of big occasions and celebrations throughout the year, and offers a simple way for us to celebrate Christmas with a lighter ecological footprint.
