We gather at the foot of the Cross as Jesus is crucified for the sins of the world, and we wonder at the depth of his compassion as he prays 'Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.'

We begin with the lighting of the New Fire and blessing of the Paschal Candle which is carried into a darkened church as we proclaim 'Christ, our light!'. The Exsultet is sung and we listen to scripture readings telling the story of our salvation from Genesis to the Resurrection on the Lord and the first mass of Easter is celebrated.

The tomb is empty for Christ is risen, alleluia!
