Church Lawton to host Fish and Chip Supper, Beacon Lighting and 40’S Party Night to Commemorate D-Day Landings Church Lawton is planning to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings in 1944 - the largest naval, air and land operation in history - in style. All Saint’s Church. Church Lawton Parish Council and Lawton Memorial Hall have been planning events for some time to enable to the community to come together to remember, give thanks and celebrate this historic occasion. On June 6, there is an invitation for people of all ages to come together as the church bells toll to share A Peace Supper at Lawton Memorial Hall before walking to the church to hear the International Tribute and witness the lighting of the beacon at 9.15pm. As it is National Fish and Chip Day (moved to this day to support the commemoration) on 6 June, supper will be fish and chips! On Saturday evening, the hall will again be opening its doors to celebrate 80 years of peace with a Forties Party Night of fun with a chance to get into the 40’s spirit by dressing in costume, singing war time classics, dancing the swing and jive and having a good time 40’s style. All the proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the Royal British Legion in memory of those who lost their lives during the D-Day landings. ‘We are also hoping to be able to pay tribute to local heroes from the World War 2 and acknowledge the part local people played in those conflicts. A call out to local people who may have stories, photographs, etc of family from that time is being made so that we can create an archive of Church Lawton at War. This will be on display during the events,’ announced Margaret Blease-Bourne, Chair of the Operational Committee at the Hall. ‘If you have photographs, stories, newspaper cuttings about Church Lawton in World War 2, please email chair.committee@lawtonmemorialhall.co.uk.
