Holy Communion for the Feast of Christ the King: celebrant the Rev. Marion Barber
First reading: Ephesians 1.15-23
Gospel: Matthew 25.31-46
Junior Church takes place at the same time in the hall.
At the end of the Christian year, Christ the King Sunday celebrates Christ's victory over death, ascent to glory and authority over the created universe. While the feast itself is of fairly recent origin, the concept of Christ's enthronement in heaven goes back to the earliest days of Christianity and 'Christ in Majesty' is a traditional theme in religious art. This imagery, however, often contains reminders that Christ's kingship is not the same as worldly power and was achieved through suffering and sacrifice; traditionally, Christ in Majesty bears the marks of the crucifixion. 'those wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified'.
