Family Communion for the third Sunday of Lent: celebrant the Revd Tola Badejo.

First reading: 1 Corinthians 10. 1–13
Second reading: Luke 13. 1–9

Today's Gospel is the famous parable of the barren fig tree. While the meaning of the parable seems to be severe - the tree that yields no fruit must be uprooted and destroyed - the severity is tempered with mercy; another year's grace is to be given. The tree is not the only character in the story: apart from the disappointed landowner, there is also the worker in the vineyard, who intercedes on behalf of the tree, and undertakes to try to make it bear fruit. In this parable, each of us is both tree and labourer; responsible for our own fruitfulness, but also responsible for nurturing others - the question begging to be asked is why the labourer hasn't tried to encourage the tree already.
