Holy Communion for the Sunday last before Lent: celebrant the Revd Tola Badejo. Junior Church takes place at the same time in the hall.
First reading: 2 Corinthians 3.12-4.2
Gospel: Luke 9. 28-43
It is inevitable that when the first reading in our service comes from the New Testament - from Acts or one of the Epistles - its subject matter is related to Gospel events that have already happened. Both readings address the idea of transformation: the transfiguration episode in the Gospel describes the revelation to Peter, James and John of Christ in his full glory, and in the Epistle, Paul explains that the Christian can look confidently upon the glory of God, and thereby be 'transformed into the same image'. This he contrasts with the Old Testament episode in which Moses was transfigured by his meeting with God (Exodus 34.29); instead of confidence, the Israelites felt fear, so Moses had to veil his face when he spoke to them.
The Gospel reading continues beyond the astonishing events on the mountain. Jesus and the disciples cannot stay there; their mission is to engage with the everyday world, and to transform it in turn.
