Family Communion for the second Sunday before Lent; celebrant the Revd Tola Badejo.
First reading: Revelation 4
Gospel: Luke 8. 22-25
At first sight it is difficult to see a connection between the lectionary's two readings for today. Unusually, we have a whole chapter as the first reading, the description of the throne of heaven in Revelation 4; the Gospel is Luke's account of Jesus quelling the storm. Both passages, however, relate to the power of God, and both might best be understood as metaphors. Revelation 4 represents the majesty of God through powerful imagery, and the Gospel shows how that power might impact on human lives in the material world. Few of us will literally fight to survive in actual life-threatening weather at sea; many will face metaphorical storms of one kind or another.
The anonymous thirteenth-century image above, from an illuminated manuscript, shows some of the key elements of Revelation 4: Christ enthroned, within a frame (a 'mandorla'); the four living creatures supporting the mandorla, and the twenty-four elders surrounding him.
