First reading: 1 Corinthians 15. 12 - 20
Gospel: Luke 6. 17 - 26

The Gospel today contains Luke's version of the Beatitudes, Jesus's teaching about those who appear to be unfortunate in life. The four blessings promised to them are balanced by four 'woes' for those who seem to be doing well. On the one hand, God is concerned by human suffering and will bring comfort; on the other, none of us should assume that our good fortune is deserved, or will last for ever. Above all, the Beatitudes underline the truth that human misfortune is never a sign of God's disfavour.
