Holy Communion for the 21st Sunday after Trinity: celebrant the Revd Adetola Badejo.

First reading: Hebrews 5. 1-10
Gospel: Mark 10. 35-45

The theme linking today's readings is service: Christ's service to humanity and our duty of service to one another. His words to the disciples are double-edged: on the one hand, his followers must be prepared to serve in humble ways, but on the other, the most humble forms of service are as worthy as those apparently more exalted. The painting 'Christ in the house of Martha and Mary' by Diego Velasquez underlines the latter point, reflecting St Teresa of Avila's exhortation to her sisters:

' Do not be disconsolate when obedience leads you to be concerned with external, worldly matters; understand that, if your task is in the kitchen, the Lord walks among the pots and pans, helping you in all things spiritual and temporal.'
