Family Communion for the 20th Sunday after Trinity. Celebrant the Revd Adetola Badejo.
First reading: Hebrews 4.12-16
Gospel: Mark 10. 17-31
Today's Gospel is the challenging story of Jesus and the rich young man. The point of the story is not that wealth is inherently evil, but that it should never be more important than following Christ. The Gospel writers were master storytellers, and good stories in the past were often intentionally open-ended, so that listeners could discuss what might have happened next; in this case, we don't know, apart from that the young man went away sad. Perhaps he reflected on what Christ had said, realised that the mere possession of wealth didn't make him happy, and at some future time came back. The story invites us to think how we might respond, and to consider what our personal obstacles might be.
The image is a part of 'Christ and the Rich Young Ruler' by the late nineteenth-century German painter Heinrich Hoffman. Hoffman excelled and specialised in paintings of the life of Christ; here, he powerfully captures the point that even as Jesus told the young man the painful truth he needed to hear, he loved him.
