Family Communion for the Sunday next before Lent.
First reading: 2 Kings 2.1–12
Gospel: Mark 9.2–9

This Sunday is not the Feast of the Transfiguration, but the first reading is about Elijah's ascent into heaven and the Gospel describes the Transfiguration of Christ, passages which relate to the theme of 'change' we are exploring on the two Sundays before Lent. Elijah and Jesus are not the only characters to be transformed: for Elisha, like the disciples accompanying Jesus, the experiences are life-changing. What happens before their eyes is terrifying but also inspiring, and in both passages the witnesses leave with a deepened understanding of God and of the challenges before them.
