Shortly after the organ was moved here, a brief but accurate history was compiled, a photograph of which is reproduced below. The lack of original pedals, and some evidence that part of the case was once painted blue, possibly suggests that the organ's original home was not a church but a prosperous family's private house (with at least one room of considerable height); there is a tradition that Florence Nightingale played it, which lacks any concrete evidence but might be consistent with both a domestic origin and later use at the Royal Herbert Military Hospital.
