The church roof was repaired in 2021.
This has been a huge undertaking that is long overdue. The main roof of the nave, and the North aisle, were in urgent need of re-roofing as the previous roof material was over 50 years old, is made of felt and leaked like a sieve!! The church went onto the Heritage at Risk Register; which gives recognition that the problem is serious and the structural 13th century roof timbers were becoming damaged.
The roof timbers were in a more serious state than expected, this both delayed and increased the cost of the project by £24k to £135k.
Whilst the scaffold was up in the nave for this, we re-limewashed the nave walls which completely refreshed and lifted the interior of the church. The plan is to use the building far more, for community activities such as concerts.
Thank you to all our funders for your generosity.
We still need to continue fundraising as the church's funds are flattened and will simply not be able to cover running costs in 2023.
The church has committed all of our remaining funds to the project. Frustratingly due to the Covid crisis the church has missed out on fundraising events, and of course our routine giving via services. To compound this the grant providers and charities we would normally depend on have also suffered major financing shortfalls.
The village church is there for you whenever it is needed - a calm space for private prayer and reflection, for when you need to be quiet, to celebrate or to mourn. The church bells ring out to mark important national and village events, such as VE Day and the 100 year anniversary of the death of each village soldier in WW1. The clock is heard across the fields and byways, and the graveyard is the resting place of countless generations of parishioners. Please help us keep the church open for all of our life events.
