Come and join us tomorrow 19 February at 10.30 a.m. for the final Sunday before Lent; this is the last time you can sing the Gloria until Maundy Thursday! All the readings relate to Jesus' Transfiguration before he sets his face to Jerusalem and his certain death. The reading from Exodus shows Moses going up Mount Sinai and having the most extraordinary encounter with God, prefiguring the Transfiguration; Peter's letter confirms the experience of the Transfiguration ('we were eyewitnesses of his majesty') with the voice of God the Father telling Peter, James and John that Jesus is '...my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.' The gospel of Matthew records the Transfiguration with the self-same words, but also confirms that the disciples see Jesus speaking with Moses and Elijah. This shows that God moves right across our idea of time; the not-yet-crucified Jesus is speaking in the present with two prophets who had died many centuries before. When they come down from the mountain Jesus tells the disciples not to tell anyone about it, until he has been raised from the dead; we can assume that this is to protect them from persecution by the authorities. All are welcome, either in person or on the live stream!
