Come and join us tomorrow 17 January at 10.00 a.m. at our Morning Prayer and Holy Rosary as we celebrate the life and witness of Bishop Charles Gore, who died on this day in 1932, Principal of Pusey House (up to 1894), founder in 1892 of the Community of the Resurrection, which was located first in Oxford and then by 1902 in Mirfield near Wakefield, where it still flourishes. In 1902 Charles Gore became Bishop of Worcester (after a lot of protest about his Anglo-Catholic practices and beliefs), then in 1905 he was installed as the first Bishop of Birmingham. In 1911 he became Bishop of Oxford. He supported the foundation of the Christian Social Union, an organisation which sought to alleviate poverty in the slums and sweatshops found particularly in urban centres such as London. The work of the Anglo-Catholic slum priests, all members of the Society of the Holy Cross (e.g. Fr Charles Lowder at St Peter’s London Docks) and that of the Sisters of Mercy resulted directly from the application of social action within the Gospel. The work and ethos of the Community of the Resurrection in Africa led directly to the activism of many priests, including Bishops Trevor Huddleston and Desmond Tutu against the evils of apartheid.
All are welcome in person, and we hope that the livestream will work this week! Last Wednesday the internet and livestream were down so we could not stream our service on Facebook.
