Tomorrow 6 December is the feast of St Nicholas, not the cuddly rosy-cheeked Santa Claus who was created by Haddon Sundblom in 1931 as an advert for the Coca-Cola company, but the real Bishop of Myra , who gave up all his wealth to be ordained as a priest. The town of Myra was originally Lycian and was renamed Denre in 2005, in present-day Antalya Province of Turkey. St Nicholas was born around 270 AD and tradition has it that he died on 6 December 343 AD. One of his legends has it that he threw bags of gold through the windows of 3 poor girls to save them from prostitution. Michael the Archimandrite (814 - 842 AD) wrote a life of St Nicholas which it is believed used the earliest sources and is considered the most truthful account.
One way or another, we celebrate, along with so many countries in Europe, the feast of St Nicholas and rejoice in his witness to the Truth in Our Lord Jesus Christ. Come and join us for Morning Prayer and Holy Rosary at 10.00 a.m., livestreamed as usual, in honour of this wonderful saint.
