About Us
The original parish church of St James’ Hatcham was consecrated in 1854 and stands as a testament to the faith and foresight of the Christians who came before us. Today, we continue to serve God and the communities of New Cross and Deptford, building on their legacy. We believe it is the dedication and faith of our people – past, present, and future – that ensure the church remains open and welcoming to all who wish to join in worship. Located at the heart of Goldsmiths, University of London, St James’ also oversees the neighbouring St James’ Hatcham Church of England Primary School.
The congregation of St James’ has always demonstrated adaptability in responding to the evolving needs of both the church family and the local community. In 1982, we transitioned from the original Victorian building to the adjacent church hall, which was more modern, cost-effective, and manageable. This served us well until 2008, when an advent wreath candle caused significant damage, covering the entire downstairs of the church in black soot. The fire brigade reported that it was a miracle the wreath did not ignite further and destroy the building entirely. In 2010, the decision was made to redevelop the site into the bright, flexible worship space we now enjoy. During the two years of redevelopment, our church community was graciously hosted by St James’ School, where essential worship items such as the cross, chalices, and candles were carefully transported from the vicarage to the school hall each Sunday. Since its rededication in 2012, the church has provided a space that is both beautiful and functional for prayer and worship.
St Michael’s Church was established to fulfill a vision of creating a place of worship within the Milton Court Estate, Deptford. In addition to a worship space, the building includes a community centre and three flats, one of which is designated for clergy use, while the other two generate rental income to support the ministry. Consecrated in May 1971, St Michael’s has a small but faithful congregation. As community needs continue to evolve and resources diminish, significant prayer and discernment are being devoted to sustaining the vision of service and ministry that St Michael’s represents.
