Lent is a period of six weeks (40 days not including Sundays) leading up to Easter and starts on Ash Wednesday., which this year is on Wednesday 5th March. What is the story behind Lent? After his baptism, Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray before he began his ministry. Whilst he was in the desert he was tempted several times by Satan, but resisted the temptations that Satan offered.Lent allows Christians to remember Jesus's time in the desert. It is traditionally a time of giving things up and a test of self-discipline. However in recent years there has been a movement to encourage Christians to take up an activity, like attending a Bible study course or an extra service, rather than giving something up.
