St Martin's Chipping Ongar
We should like to extend a very warm welcome to you from all of us here at St Martin's.
We hope you will find all the information you need about us on these pages, whether you are thinking of visiting us, or are already a member of our church community. An important element in our reaching out to our local community is making the church building available each day for those who wish to visit for whatever reason. St Martin's is normally open Sunday to Friday from 9.30am to 5pm (dusk if earlier) and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 12noon.
UNFORTUNATELY due to Storm Damage to the Chancel Ceiling in November 2023 the Church is currently only open for services. But repair work starts in early November and is expected to take approximately 5 weeks and after that we will be able to open the church in daylight hours on most days of the week to visitors, pilgrims, and those who just want some peace and quiet.Services are held on every Sunday and Wednesday. Children are very welcome and especially to our Family orientated services on the first and third Sundays at 10.30am.

St Peter's Shelley
St Peter's church is normally open daily during daylight hours to visitors, tourists and pilgrims and as a quiet space for private prayer and reflection. St Peter's is at present operating as a Chapel of Ease with the Bishop's permission although we do hold occasional services there. Unfortunately, the church is located away from the centre of Shelley and with a worshipping congregation of less than five, the PCC feel it is becoming unsustainable and it is actively exploring the possibility of closing the building. However, we still have a very strong commitment in serving this part of the Parish and in the event of closure the PCC would remain responsible for the maintenance of the churchyard and this would also still be open for access and for burials.

Most churches are “Excepted Charities” and are therefore not registered with the Charity Commission. You can download a PDF that includes your church name, address and church code. This PDF, which is an extract from the Church of England’s database of churches, can serve as a certificate for churches requiring proof of their charity status when registering for online and card-based giving. Click on the download button below and fill in the short form. You will then be emailed the certificate as a PDF.
