This week, the StB art club has opened, initially online. We are getting together to do some art (in any media we prefer from free drawing apps to wallpaper and poster paint) to help to cope with the emotional impact of lockdown. There is just one rule - NO drawing is allowed, just yet. We are using colours only to give expression to ourselves. Some people are using free drawing apps, and others will use old bits of wallpaper and poster paint. It does not matter how you do the art, just that you enjoy it, and perhaps you will find it therapeutic. Come and join us by going to 'St Barnabas Church Eltham FB Group'.
Recently there have been two fundraising events by members of the church, both named Rosie! Both Rosies have had personal experience of the devastating effects of cancer. And both ran for MacMillan Cancer Relief the not inconsiderable distance of 10k. Taken together their efforts raised 1800 pounds, and money continues to come in. There is news of a further fundraiser being organised by a young man at StB who is supporting the 6k memory walk for the Alzeimer's Society on 29th September 2019.
At Easter Emma Sawyer was baptised at St Barnabas in the main Sunday Service. Emma works in parliament and lives in the parish. She was supported by her partner Matt, who was baptised in Louisiana as a baby. Emma and Matt have been coming to church for a few years. Two weeks after Easter another baptism was held in the main service. The baptismal candidate was Shelley who works as a teacher. She was supported by her partner Nilesh. Shelley has been a Christian for her entire life, ever since learning to pray as a child. The vicar, Revd Steve Cook, hopes that Emma, Shelley, Matt and and another candidate Makula will be baptised later in the year, probably at a service at Southwark Cathedral. The vicar commented on these good news items by quoting a line from the service of baptism "the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling".
