AN URGENT APPEAL
Update on Debden Church Roof Repairs
Last year we started work on a project to repair the roof at Debden Church. The need for repairs came about following a routine five yearly survey that all churches undertake. The report from the survey identified that the nave roof urgently needed re-slating, along with repairs to windows and door stonework.
Work on the project has continued throughout the autumn and we received three tenders for the works just before Christmas.
Originally it was hoped that the costs would be in the region of £54,000. Having received the tenders, we now find the costs are in the region of £80,000. Quite a jump! However, I'm pleased to say we have managed to raise half that figure through a grant from the Searle Trust and from our own fundraising activities, including two very enjoyable music concerts held in June 2024 & 2025.
We are, however, still short of what we need to get the project underway in our proposed timescale. Allowing for bats and weddings, we would ideally have undertaken the works in September/October 2024, meaning the church would be have been watertight and safe for the winter of 2024/25 and beyond. Unfortunately, the programme has slipped, and the works are now scheduled to commence in 2025, subject to legal requirements for protecting bats.
If you feel you can, we would be very grateful to receive donations from Debden residents towards these costs. Please contact me for further details or make an online donation through this website. We are signed up to the government's gift aid scheme, so your gift could be increased by 25% at no cost to you!
Thank you all, again, for your support on this project, and generally with the Church. I'm sure you'll all agree that Debden Church is a very special building in an idyllic spot. Our aim is to keep the Church open and available to all the local community for years to come for services, festivals and family events.
