Lent Course

Venue
Bradford Cathedral

We will be running the Living Hope course this Lent, using materials produced by the Church of England, beginning Wednesday 12th March 2025 and meeting every Wednesday in Lent at 7pm. Copies of the accompanying booklet will be available for those attending the course.

Living Hope offers us the opportunity to deepen our hope in God in times of frustration or uncertainty and to be part of what God is doing to bring hope in the world. The hope God offers us is not wishful thinking. It is, as the Bible suggests, something alive – real, robust, rooted. The readings and reflections explore how we can have hope in amongst the disappointment of daily setbacks and the pain of deeper hurts. We will explore how God is present with us through it all and how God promises a future where all things are healed and made new.

If you would like to take part in the course, please let one of the clergy team know or email [email protected].

Gideon Klein was a bright and brilliant young composer murdered by the Nazis.

For him, music was his lifeline and his resistance; for his doting sister, it could be his hubris. In an age of unfolding atrocity, what do you do when the music of personal solace can be used as a tool of your oppression? Amid hate, war, and propaganda, should your music play on no matter what the cost?

Gideon challenges audiences to engage deeply with history, find hidden hope, and draw strength from art as we confront upheaval in our own world. It is a co-production between Bradford Cathedral, Bradford Reformed Synagogue and Modalways CIC.

Additional performance on Saturday 5th April at 5pm

The Deposition of Christ, by Simon Rice, is a moment in the gospel accounts when Jesus was taken down from the cross to be laid in the tomb. It is a passing moment; a necessary transition in the story but captured here on canvas.

The painting, however, is surprising and jarring. It is both realistic and surreal. It is muted and dark but with splashes of colour. There are expected figures alongside anachronistic objects. It is an expression of an artist wrestling to make sense of his subject.

The painting is accompanied by the story of the artist's evolution of the piece and, so, the process becomes just as important as the final piece.

The exhibition is open during the Cathedral's regular opening times, and around services.

Bradford is a place of travellers who built a common home together. The stories of crossing into Bradford are stories of departures and of arrivals; some forced others chosen.

For some the life before Bradford is tinged with sadness of pain while others hold onto that previous life with pride and delight. Some have found the life in Bradford challenging and hard while others have thrived and discovered new life. All these stories shape our present and feed our future.

By hearing the stories of first generation arrivals from different parts of the world we hope all Bradfordians will be encouraged to share their own journeys to this place and time.

We are looking to find shared commonality in our different individual stories and identify ourselves in the larger social narratives that have shaped our collective culture.

In partnership with the University we are hosting an exhibition of Ugandan Asian migration stories, alongside stories from the Windrush Community. These two exhibitions will open up dialogue between different journeys of hope from two communities who continue to tell important, positive stories of Bradford’s own black history as well as stories of migration to our city of sanctuary.

This exhibition presents the creative voices of students from Carlton Bolling School, young people whose art emerges from the crucibles of life in our intercultural, interfaith city. Many of these students, primarily from Muslim backgrounds, are sharing their work with the public for the first time, inviting us to see them as they see themselves. In partnership with the Cathedral, this initiative not only opens doors into the arts for these students but also offers a glimpse of resilience, strength, and hope—a prophetic testament to their experiences and aspirations as they navigate paths toward creative futures.

You can also join us for the opening event on Monday 10th February and the presentation event on Wednesday 26th February.

The exhibition is open daily 10am- 4pm excluding Sunday 2nd March.
